The leaves are now falling like snow covering the green summer lawn to a point where you only see the color of the leaves. The leaf blowers are making noises everywhere. Apple picking season is over. The smell of snow is in the air. It's Halloween time. My kids treat the holiday with up most readiness. They start with the spooky music on youtube, then move on to their favorite scary movie... Tim burton's movie The Nightmare Before Christmas. I saw it 50 times in October. I'm starting to sing along to the songs. My kids know the songs by heart.
When I was their age, This was my favorite Holiday too. I watched the First Halloween Movie Directed by John Carpenter and starring the fabulous Jamie Lee Curtis. I had nightmares for days, and I loved it. On Halloween night, we kids would use pillow covers for our candy. Back then, people bought giant candy and gave apples and oranges.
Trick- or -Treat......
My kids last year asked me about the saying Trick or treat when they arrived at the house for that delicious candy. Trick-or-treat has traced the earliest usage of the phrase in connection with Halloween to a 1927 Alberta newspaper article reporting on pranksters demanding "trick or treat" at houses.
Why do we wear costumes?
One theory explains that Halloween originated with the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, where people would light bonfires and dress up in costumes to scare off roaming ghosts and spirits. They believed ghosts came back to Earth on Halloween and would haunt anyone who left their homes.
My Theory is........ We use Halloween night to dress and be someone else for one night. A superhero, maybe because we feel no one will see us for the rest of the year. Dress as women or men because we think feminine or masculine. For me, I always dressed as a superhero.
However, if you dress up on Halloween night, know you can be anything you want on Halloween and the rest of the year too.
